Blackbeard's Crew
Background
While the court records for Blackbeard have yet to be discovered, we still have some information about the crew of the infamous Blackbeard. Many of his crew would be killed during the Battle of Ocracoke Inlet and the survivors would mostly be hung in the Colony and Dominion of Virginia in 1718. Overall Blackbeard was known to have a diverse and motley crew of pirates at his height including hundreds of freed slaves and former privateers.
However, near the end of his life he was likely planning on settling down and taking the King's Pardon (1718) when Robert Maynard and his pirate hunters attacked him and his lightly reduced skeleton crew after he had deliberately run his massive flagship the Queen Anne's Revenge and deserted the bulk of his crew.
However, even despite this it took Maynard and his pirate hunters significant effort to capture and subdue Blackbeard, eventually killing him. Had Blackbeard likely stayed at his full capacity and not abandoned his crew and ship he would have devastated the colonial troops. In the end the story of Edward 'Blackbeard' Teach continues to captivate minds and continues to be one of the most popular pirates of legend and lore.

| Israel Hands | Sailing-master of Blackbeard's crew on the Queen Anne's Revenge. One day while Hands and Blackbeard were chatting with another captain Teach shot him in the knee and crippled him for life, saying he needed to exercise his authority every now and then. Hands deserted Blackbeard and was captured in Bath in North Carolina by Brand. At this point he turned kings evidence against Blackbeard and Tobias Knight. He would be tried for piracy in Virginia in December of 1718 but pardoned. His final fate was last seen begging for bread in London. |

| Samuel Odell | Odell was taken prisoner by Blackbeard on 21 November 1718 and the following day liberated by Robert Maynard. He received more than seventy wounds during the Battle of Ocracoke Inlet but recovered and eventually was acquitted during his trial for piracy charges. |

| Lieutenant Richards | Served as the Lieutenant to Blackbeard aboard his ship the Queen Anne's Revenge. Richards would be part of the Blockade of Charles Town and led the group of pirates that met the Governor to demand a medicine chest. They threatened to cut the throats of all prisoners if medical supplies were not brought to them. While waiting for the Governors reply the pirates shocked the colonial townsfolk with their behavior. |
